Golf Tournament Flyer in Adobe PDF Format Dear Friends, While deeply saddened over the tragic Christmas Day mudslide, the Saint Sophia Camp Committee has spent the last six months in prayer and planning for the future of our camping program. As you may well know, Saint Sophia Camp and Retreat Center remains closed indefinitely. Since our physical site is not available, our summer program will be held at Camp Seeley located in the San Bernardino Mountains near Lake Gregory and the Village of Crestline. We will continue our fundraising efforts for the benefit of our camping program which has enriched the lives of generations of children. Our goal is to teach our children about our Orthodox faith so they may grow in spirituality and to promote Orthodox Christian Fellowship through the unique camping atmosphere we provide yearly. We feel that the Saint Sophia Camp experience unites the youth of all our communities in the Southern California area and beyond like no other Orthodox ministry. We hope to continue fostering our children’s relationship with their faith, connecting them to our Greek Orthodox communities and providing them with an opportunity to make life-long friends. We certainly hope you can join us in celebrating our upcoming 26th ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT on October 15, 2004 at Rio Hondo Golf Course. Please contact us for more information and sponsorship opportunities at these events which help us underwrite expenses. Thank you for your prayers and concern these past months. Sincerely, The Saint Sophia Camp Committee

DISASTER AT SAINT SOPHIA CAMP AND RETREAT CENTER VOWS TO HELP VICTIMS
[Los Angeles] Following a memorial service Sunday at Sophia Cathedral for the Christmas Day mudslide victims of Saint Sophia Camp in Old Waterman Canyon, San Bernardino; members of the community gathered to mourn the loss of their friend, Jorge Monzon, his wife Clara, daughters Wendy and Raquel, and baby son Jeremiah. The entire Monzon family perished in the Christmas Day mudslide. Father Bakas said, “We have lost a person and a family we loved and who loved our camp as much as we did.” Father Bakas’ feelings are echoed by the entire southland Greek Orthodox community. “Jorge was a well-respected friend deeply loved and admired by us all,” Father Bakas continued. “We’ve watched little Raquel grow up and so recently welcomed baby Jeremiah. Our devastation is indescribable, and life without the Monzon family leaves a void in our cathedral ministry. Their loss is heart wrenching to our entire community, and our grief goes out to all those suffering for their loved ones. The immediate goal is to raise funds to provide assistance for those families of the victims, which include nine (9) children and five (5) adults, and help mend the wounds left open by their untimely deaths.” We are working with the staff of The Church of God of Prophecy in San Bernardino, where most of victims worshiped, to coordinate this effort.” County rescue officials finally allowed Father John Bakas and a group of Saint Sophia parishioners to visit the site of the devastation for the first time at 10:00 Monday morning, December 29, while bulldozers and chainsaws grumbled in the distance. Father Bakas, joined by the parishioners and rescue workers, performed a traditional Greek Orthodox memorial service there for the victims and prayed their families and the survivors.
A disaster relief fund has been established to assist those who have lost family members. The Mudslide Victims Fund
will be administrated by Saint Sophia Cathedral which is the church in Los Angeles. All funds will be directed for
the benefit of the families of the victims. Checks should be made payable to Saint Sophia Cathedral with the words,
Mudslide Victims Fund, written on the memo line and sent to the Cathedral at 1324 South Normandie Avenue, Los Angeles,
CA 90006.

June 1, 2002 - A Night at the Club Dear Friends, The Saint Sophia Camp Committee invites you to attend the eighth annual A Night at the Club. Your generous support of this yearly event has enabled us to greatly improve the Camp's facilities and programs. In addition to your attendance, we ask your help in underwriting the evening's expenses by becoming a sponsor. The response card lists the sponsor categories. Sponsor donations allow us to direct more funds toward our youth activities and future projects. A portion of this evening's proceeds will go into our Lodge Building Fund. We are currently in the planning stages of building a multiple use lodge facility to replace the existing Mess Hall. This facility will accommodate larger groups for meals and other activities and will benefit not only our youth camping programs, but rental groups as well by creating areas to meet and socialize. In this our 40th year, we can all appreciate the fact that generations of campers have left their mark on the campsite, and so, too, has our beloved Camp enriched all those who have attended. Though its physical appearance has been transformed, it remains unchanged in spirit as it continues to bond the youth of Southern California and create life long relationships. We are blessed with the generosity of many loyal supporters and wish to express our sincere thanks for your continued contributions. When you support our fundraising efforts you invest in our youth and allow us to continue in the ministry of our faith.
Sincerely,
Camp directors have included Billy Tragus and Perry Skaggs (pictured below). Both have been a part of our camping ministry for many years. With an excellent staff and enthusiastic volunteer counselors, they run a well-rounded program for campers to enjoy.
